For us Siracusani, Plemmirio represents an uncontaminated coast, a Natural reserve and also the spot where took place the battle against Romans (II b.C.)
It is located at around 3 km’s away from Syracuse (photo), the wonderful and powerful town of the past (V b.C.). Here we can admire many impressive monuments of the past as, for instance, the Greek theatre, the Orecchio di Dionisio, the temple of Athena, whose columns, presently, are incorporated inside the Duomo, as aisles and the archaeological museum Paolo Orsi, the biggest and among the most important in the world.
Worth a visit also the museum of Papyrus.
Ortigia is the downtown of Syracuse and is a little island linked to the mainland through two bridges. It’s a unique place, nice and full of life and with a great outdoor market.
Piazza Duomo is the hearth of Ortigia but don’t forget to visit the fonte Aretusa (where still now Papyrus grows), and to have a walk along the promenade.
15 km’s away here it is the capital of Baroque style in the world: Noto.
Close by Noto here it is Vendicari, a sort of paradise for birds, birdwatchers, sea lovers, naturalists, archaeologists …
Another great naturalistic site is Cavagrande del Cassibile (photo, 15 km’s), a canyon with lakes, gorges and many ancient settlements carved on the rock.
Do you want to see 5.000 tombs carved on the rock, an underground river and a lush forest? Welcome to Pantalica (Unesco's), 40 km's away
Etna, the biggest volcano in Europe (3.300 meters) is 60 km’s away.
That’s all.
Just a last tip: have a pizza or a fish meal in Ortigia.
And don’t forget to taste the granita for breakfast!
