Kamarina

Near the African sea is where you find Kamarina, Siracusan colony of the 6th century BC.  It was a very important Siceliot city (Greeks of Sicily) founded by the Siracusani around 598 BC near the River Ippari, which was navigable.

Today only a little remains of its ancient splendor: the tomb from the 4th century BC, ruins of the Temple to Minerva and the rest are houses and various buildings.

In the area near the Passo Marinaro forest, one sees tombs of a necropolis of the 4th and 5th centuries BC.

The acropolis shows a continuous use: the remains of the temple of the principal divinity, Athena, were clustered inside the construction of the Church of The Madonna di Cammarana (today the archeological museum).
