Monte Castellazzo of Marianopoli

Monte Castellazzo di MarianopoliSitting in the middle of Sicily, in the fields of wheat and the peace and quiet of an agricultural civilization, is Mount Castellazzo, site of an ancient Greek settlement. Today we can see ruins, vestiges of ancient times, and the standard stunning bucolic view in this part of Sicily.
The mountain is accessed by crossing the fields of wheat that are full of fragments from the past, by a staircase carved in rock that finally bring us to the top, easily and quickly enough.
Here you can see diverse structures, cisterns, imposing wall fortifications…..
The settlement of Mount Castellazzo may have been the center of Hellenistic Mytistraton (which was destroyed by the Romans in the 3rd century BC, during the Punic War) based upon findings of many coins made in the mint of this fortified town, which has been often cited in early writings about the Punic War. Many and marvellous artifacts are preserved in the Marianopoli Museum, among which are arrowheads, bullets from slingshots, an obelisk with a Greek inscription, a part of a votive monument found inside a sacred enclosure, the temenos from the Balate area, indigenous pottery from the 7th – 6th century BC….
