Serre di Villalba serre-villalba (8)A beautiful place, in the central crossroads of Sicily. There is a long rocky ridge, a real jagged corridor of little hills that has its apex in the south, where you find Cozzo Pirtusiddu (pirtusu means “hole” in Sicilian), 891 meters above sea level and named because it is a rock with a hole in the center.
Here, the panorama is a sea of wheat !
You travel, leaving from the northern border of Le Serre, close to the village of Villalba, where there is a sort of picnic area. With some difficulty you walk the barren two kilometers at the top of the serra, using only, but quite easily, your “sense of direction”.

serre-villalba (3) After about an hour of walking, you arrive at the above-mentioned Cozzo Pirtusiddu, where there is a little forest and where in 2011, the writer Giovanni Vallone found a lithic fragment (a flint arrowhead) dating back to prehistoric times, testimony to the early Sicilians that came to these parts to hunt .

serre-villalba (5)Another more fantastic hypothesis could be that here existed some pagan cult linked in some spiritual way to the Cozzo Pirtusiddu, that at the top seems like an enormous drilled-out rock and that dominates the landscape below; a sort of natural window that has an obviously strong, rich spiritual call.
In either cases the discovery is the proof of the massive human preistoric presence in the interior of Sicily. Then came the Romans with the wheat….
