It’s the highest point (884 meters) of the natural staircase that from the sea of Giardini Naxos, trough Taormina and Castelmola reaches the hinterland of this area.

Cafè Monte Venere, 1A wonderful path leads from Taormina to monte Veneretta.

It was renowned a lot in the past, most of all during the Belle Epoque (between the end of the XIX century) when many foreigners used to visit and to buy lands in Taormina.

Still now, almost by the top, it is possible to see the ruins of the Cafè Monte Venere (photo),with a stunning view of the Ionian sea and Taormina.

trevelyanAnd still now it’s possible to imagine David Herbert Lawrence writing the betrayals of his frivolous wife, Lady Chatterley that here was in love with her famous lover !

Or Lady Trevellian (a cousin of the queen of England) have a coffeè in this spot.

This woman married the major of Taormina and wanted to be buried in her farmhouse, just here, in the forest of Monte Veneretta.

Nowadays the grave of this member of the English royal family is in a private property !

And fortunately signora Maria put some flowers to the memory of Lady Trevellian !
